The BAIC BJ80 has been making waves in the automotive world for its striking resemblance to the iconic Mercedes G-Wagon. BAIC Motor, a Chinese carmaker known for its passenger cars, military vehicles, and SUVs, has taken inspiration from the famous German SUV to create their own version for the domestic and select African markets.
BAIC Motor has a notable history of joint ventures with international automakers, including Beijing Hyundai and Beijing Benz, where they manufacture and assemble Hyundai and Mercedes-branded cars for the Chinese market. Beijing Benz, a joint venture between BAIC and Daimler AG, has been responsible for assembling the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and C-Class in China.
The BAIC BJ80, introduced as a G-Wagon alternative, offers a more affordable option for those who admire the Mercedes G-Wagon but find it beyond their budget. While there are minor exterior differences between the BJ80 and the original G-Class, the overall design closely resembles the previous generation G-Class. The distinct BAIC signature front grille with five ‘U’s sets it apart from the G-Wagon, along with slightly different light cluster designs reminiscent of the previous generation Defender.
Despite the minor differences, the BAIC BJ80 bears an uncanny resemblance to the G-Class, from the external door hinges to the side-swinging rear door and the spare wheel mounted on the tailgate. The dimensions of the Chinese off-roader are also remarkably similar to its German counterpart.
The story behind the BAIC BJ80’s production is a contentious one, given that Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes, owns a 12% stake in BAIC Motor. The Daimler-BAIC joint venture has been relatively successful in the Chinese market, but the development of the BJ80 created tension in the relationship. Daimler reportedly tried to persuade BAIC to halt the development of the BJ80 as early as 2012, likely due to concerns about its similarity to the G-Class.
However, despite the controversy, the BAIC BJ80 made it to production and has found its niche in the market. For those who admire the iconic design of the G-Wagon but seek a more affordable option, the BAIC BJ80 offers an appealing alternative. As the Chinese automotive industry continues to grow and innovate, the BJ80 serves as an example of how global influences can shape the development of vehicles, even with some controversial resemblances.
