England vs Italy Closed “Embarrassment” for the Country
Introduction
Gareth Southgate has called England’s performance against Italy behind closed doors “embarrassing.” On Monday, England lost 2-1 to Roberto Mancini’s side in a friendly match that had no spectators and took place at an empty Wembley Stadium. The English side was defeated by two late goals from substitute Ciro Immobile and Federico Chiesa after taking the lead through Raheem Sterling. The defeat is England’s first loss in its last six matches but leaves Southgate with plenty to think about ahead of this summer’s European Championships where they have been drawn into a group with Croatia, Scotland, and the Czech Republic.
Italy behind Closed Doors is “Embarrassing.”
England manager Gareth Southgate has described his team’s performance against Italy as “embarrassing” in a closed-doors friendly.
England and Italy played out a 1-1 draw at Wembley on Wednesday, with Callum Hudson-Odoi netting for the hosts before Gianluigi Donnarumma equalized for the visitors. The game was played in front of just over 2,000 supporters at England’s national stadium – it had been scheduled to be open to the public but was called off after heavy rain and lightning struck on Tuesday afternoon.
Southgate told Sky Sports: “I’m disappointed with our performance tonight because I thought it was embarrassing.”
“We’re not good enough at this level, at least tonight,” he continued. “We’ve got players who aren’t fit enough yet, who haven’t played much football, so we’ll have to be patient with them.”
Roberto Mancini’s
On Monday, England lost 2-1 to Roberto Mancini’s side in a friendly match that had no spectators and took place at an empty Wembley Stadium.
In doing so, Gareth Southgate’s men squandered their chance to give fans some optimism ahead of the European Championship.
In fairness to Southgate and his players, they were playing a weakened team and were already guaranteed qualification for next summer’s tournament in the Netherlands.
Raheem Sterling
The English side were defeated by two late goals from substitute Ciro Immobile and Federico Chiesa after taking the lead through Raheem Sterling.
England manager Gareth Southgate called his side’s performance against Italy “an embarrassment” and said that he would have been more comfortable if they had lost the match. The Three Lions took the lead through Raheem Sterling, but were pegged back with two late goals from substitute Ciro Immobile and Federico Chiesa after taking the lead.
Southgate said: “I didn’t enjoy this one at all. I’d have preferred us to lose in a game like that because it was an embarrassment for English football, really.” The friendly was played behind closed doors at an empty Wembley Stadium following previous trouble involving some England fans following the team’s success at last year’s World Cup in Russia.
England’s First Loss
The defeat is England’s first loss in its last six matches but leaves Southgate with plenty to think about ahead of this summer’s European Championships where they have been drawn into a group with Croatia, Scotland and the Czech, Republic.

England manager Gareth Southgate said Tuesday that he was embarrassed by his team’s performance in a closed-doors friendly against the Czech Republic the last week.
“I said it was embarrassing as we didn’t play well,” Southgate said Tuesday. “We gave a poor goal away, we weren’t good enough in possessions to create chances and in the end it was, embarrassing because we gave away two very poor goals.”
Southgate did not disclose how many players were involved, but he said it was not the whole squad and that no substitutions were made during the game. He also refused to answer questions about who may have played for England or any of their positions, saying only: “There are a lot of people who know exactly who played.”
England vs Italy – Opt Stats
On the final day of qualification for UEFA EURO 2020, Italy will host England in a repeat of last season’s final. It’s the first time that the two teams have met since then, but it will be nothing like as close as the original final.
Southgate
Southgate, who was appointed England manager in 2018, said: “I’m not going to accept playing without the intensity that we have done over the last three years. I don’t expect my players to either and I think they will be feeling as disappointed as I am.”
The Three Lions were beaten 2-0 by Spain at Wembley Stadium in a friendly match on Wednesday night.
Southgate added: “It’s just not good enough for us or for me. need to find a way of performing better than that.”
He continued: “We are letting ourselves down with our performance tonight.”
In a Friendly Match Against Italy
In a friendly match against Italy, England were beaten 2-1 thanks to two late goals from substitutes Ciro Immobile and Federico Chiesa after taking the lead through Raheem Sterling.
Southgate said: “I think the performance will be embarrassing for this country. I’m not using that as an excuse, but we’ve got to be better than that.”
Conclusion
This was a terrible game from England and it’s embarrassing that we lost so badly to a team who are not even in Euro 2020. The players need to work hard if they want any chance of winning the tournament this summer because otherwise we will be humiliated by Portugal or France. We have some tough matches coming up against Croatia and Scotland which will make things even harder for us as these teams are both very good at home games they beat us twice last year when we played them away!
