The duvet cover is an accessory that originates in the northern European tradition (France, Germany, Scandinavia) but has long since become accustomed to Italian beds. Its characteristics have made it a famous alternative to traditional quilts, warm blankets that keep us warm throughout the cold season.
There are duvet covers of various fabrics (cotton, flannel, linen, silk), patterns and colours for any size and type of bed (double duvet cover, one-and-a-half square, single, king size).
Do you also want to know what a duvet cover is and how it works? Follow our mini guide.
What is a duvet cover?
Many people wonder what a duvet cover is and how it is made. The word itself says it all: it’s a cover for the duvet, i.e. the goose-down padding that keeps us warm when we rest.
The duvet cover is made like a sack: two fabrics are sewn together on three sides, leaving a hole open or resealable with buttons.
The duvet cover serves two purposes: to protect the duvet from dirt and to decorate the room. The fabric can be removed and thrown in the washing machine more quickly than the padding, and once cleaned, it can be reinserted (sometimes, it can be a bit complicated, but we’ll see how it works).
The goose down is usually white or grey. At the same time, the duvet covers can be printed with stripe duvet cover and polka dots duvet, which are very colourful and original, decorating any bed with taste. Furthermore, to change the style of the room, alternate the pattern without having to buy more padding (as in the case of quilts).
How to put on the duvet cover
One of the most common problems with the duvet cover is how to insert it, i.e. how to get the goose down inside without it balling up or losing an entire day.
The most uncomplicated procedure for putting on a duvet cover is as follows:
- Place the duvet cover on the bed inside out, with the opening facing the foot end;lay the comforter on top;
- fold the side of the head by taking a flap of the duvet cover and comforter;
- roll up the duvet and duvet cover together on the fold to form a sausage at the bottom of the bed;
- take a corner of the duvet cover, pass it over the rolled-up part and unroll it slowly.
With this procedure, the duvet automatically enters its lining. It will then be enough to spread everything well, arranging folds and padding inside.
Pay attention to the measurements of the duvet cover
The duvet covers have different sizes and dimensions depending on the bed size.
For this reason, when buying one, always make sure you know the characteristics of each one:
- double duvet cover: size 255×200 cm;
- single duvet cover: size 140×200 cm;
- duvet covers a square and a half: size 200×200 cm.
Duvet cover sheets: uses
The advantages of the duvet cover do not consist only in keeping the duvet clean or in furnishing the bed. Duvet covers in cotton, satin, or silk are very light and breathable: for this reason, many use the duvet cover as sheets in the cold period, preferring an enveloping quilt as a warm blanket.
In fact, without padding, duvet covers are a soft veil to spread on the skin in mid-season, when it’s pleasant to cover up at night but without going overboard.
And in the summer? The duvet cover sheets can be used as a bedspread for an elegant decor that can be removed when you go to bed. The bed remains fresh and colourful by simply removing the winter padding.
